There is a particular silence that follows opening a passport and seeing a date in the past. Whether you are standing at check-in or on the sofa two weeks before a trip, the questions are the same: what can this thing still do, and how fast can I get a new one? Here are the honest answers.
What an expired passport can still do
Prove who you are, mostly. An expired passport is still a genuine government document with your photo and details. Many banks, notaries and employers accept one that expired recently as proof of identity, especially alongside another document. Some domestic airlines do too. None of them are obliged to, so ask first rather than arguing at a counter.
Carry valid visas. Visas often outlive the passport they are stamped in. Several countries, including the United States for many visa types, let you travel on a valid visa in an expired passport as long as you carry the new passport with it. Others require the visa to be transferred. Check the issuing country's rule before you assume either way.
Get you a new passport. The old passport is usually the main document for a renewal. Do not throw it away, cut it, or "clean out the drawer" before the new one arrives.
What it cannot do
Cross a border. An expired passport is not a travel document, full stop. The airline will not board you for an international flight, and border officers will not admit you. The only common exception is a citizen returning home in an emergency, which requires the airline and the destination's border authority to agree in advance, and even then is not guaranteed.
Pass the six-month rule. This is the twist that catches people who did check the date. A passport with four months left is not expired, but for Thailand, India, China, most of the Middle East and many other destinations it is already unusable. Renewing from an expired passport
Most countries let you renew by the standard process if the passport expired recently. The cutoff varies: the United States allows renewal by mail for passports issued within the last 15 years to an adult; the United Kingdom lets you renew online from an expired passport indefinitely as long as it is not damaged and your details match. Elsewhere the rule is often five or ten years.
Past the cutoff, or if the expired passport was issued when you were under 16, you generally apply as a new applicant: more documents, usually an in-person appointment, and sometimes a longer wait. The paperwork is covered in what documents you need for a passport.
Whatever the route, the passport photo requirements are strict and the most common reason an application is delayed. Get the photo taken by someone who does it daily.

The exact numbers change with demand, and every passport office publishes current processing times. Look them up the day you apply, not from memory.
Two practical notes. First, urgent appointments are rationed by travel date, so booking the trip is often what unlocks the fast service, which feels backwards but is how it works. Second, if you are already abroad, your embassy or consulate issues an emergency travel document or a limited-validity passport. Call before you go; most require an appointment and a police report if the passport was lost rather than expired.
While you wait
- Tell the airline early. Some will rebook without a change fee if you have proof of a pending urgent passport appointment. None will if you turn up on the day.
- Check the new passport's number against any electronic travel authorization. ESTA, Canada's eTA, the UK's ETA and similar permits are tied to the passport number. A new passport means a new application, even if the old permit had years left.
- Photograph the new passport's data page the day it arrives and store it somewhere private. That is what you will check next time, and what you will need if it is ever lost abroad.
Never again
An expired passport is almost never a surprise to the calendar; it is a surprise to the person.
