Car registration renewal is handled by your state, not the federal government, so the date, fee and process come from your state's motor vehicle agency. The deadline is the expiration date on your registration card or sticker, and most states let you renew online before it: Texas up to 90 days ahead, Florida up to three months. Some states are strict about the day itself — California says plainly that it offers no grace period, and late penalties start immediately.

The official site for every state is in the table below. Start from your state's own site, so you know you're paying the state.

How renewal works almost everywhere

Renewing, step by step
  1. Find your expiration dateOn your registration card, sticker or renewal notice.
  2. Clear any inspection firstEmissions or safety, if your state or county requires it.
  3. Check your insurance is on fileFlorida, for one, verifies it electronically before renewing.
  4. Renew on the state's own siteOr by mail or in an office; use the link in the table below.
  5. Put the new sticker onKeep the new card in the car.

The details change from state to state, but the shape is the same:

  1. The state reminds you — maybe. California mails a billing notice about 60 days before expiration and asks you to contact it if none arrives. A notice goes to the address on record, so after a move it may never reach you.
  2. Anything required before renewal gets checked. That can be an emissions test (California's smog check, Texas's emissions counties), a safety inspection (New York requires one in the past 12 months), or insurance on file (Florida verifies it electronically and won't renew without it).
  3. You pay and get a new sticker or card. New York lets you print a temporary registration after an online renewal, and Florida's app gives you a digital document until the mail arrives.

Renewing early doesn't shorten anything: New York says your expiration date stays the same, and Texas says the same of your expiration month.

Four states, side by side

California. Your renewal fee includes a vehicle license fee based on the car's value plus registration, CHP and county fees, so the DMV's fee calculator is the only reliable way to know the amount. There's no grace period; see the late penalty table above. Many cars need a smog check at renewal, but gasoline cars less than eight model-years old pay a smog abatement fee instead.

Texas. The state base fee is $50.75 plus $1, so $51.75, before county fees. Online renewal opens 90 days before expiration and stays available for up to 12 months after, as long as you haven't been cited for the expired registration — and renewing online takes $1 off. Registration expires on the last day of the month on your sticker. Since January 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles no longer need a safety inspection to renew, but vehicles in 17 counties still need a passing emissions test.

Florida. Registrations expire at midnight on the first owner's birthday (businesses differ), and you can renew for one or two years, up to three months early. The base tax for a car is $14.50, $22.50 or $32.50 by weight, plus other statutory fees. The MyFlorida app adds a $4 processing fee per transaction.

New York. You can renew online before expiration or up to one year after, but not if the vehicle hasn't been inspected in the past 12 months. Past one year expired, you can't renew; you register the vehicle again at an office or by mail. All motorcycle registrations expire on April 30.

What being late costs

California late penalties on a renewal
1–10 days late$10 registration + $10 CHP late fee
10% of VLF + $20
11–30 days late
20% of VLF + $30
31 days to 1 year
60% of VLF + $60
1 to 2 years
80% of VLF + $100
More than 2 years
160% of VLF + $200

VLF = vehicle license fee; weight fees add the same percentage. Source: California DMV registration fees page, as of October 2026.

In California, being late costs a percentage of your vehicle license fee plus flat late fees, and it climbs quickly. The fee table above shows the tiers; on a newer car with a high vehicle license fee, even a week late adds real money.

Elsewhere the penalties differ, but a citation can make things harder: in Texas, online renewal after expiration is only available if you haven't been cited for the expired registration. If you're late, renew before you drive anywhere.

Never miss the date again

The manual way: when the new registration card arrives, photograph it, write the expiration date on a calendar entry with a reminder a month before, and note anything that has to happen first — an inspection, an emissions test. The car ownership paperwork guide covers which papers live in the glovebox and which stay at home, and the renewal calendar kit puts every household date on one sheet.

Paperlock reads the expiration date off the registration card when you scan it and, once reminders are on, nudges you 30 and 7 days before — which is roughly when a smog check or inspection needs to be booked.
