An IRS tax transcript is free, and the fastest way to get one is your IRS Individual Online Account. If you can't register, you can order a tax return or tax account transcript by mail, which arrives in 5 to 10 calendar days. A transcript isn't a photocopy: if you need the return itself, that's Form 4506, $30 per return, and it can take up to 75 days.
Most of the time a transcript is all anyone wants. Mortgage lenders and other income verifiers ask for it, and the online route is the quickest the IRS offers.

Transcript versus copy
A transcript is the IRS's record of your return, with some personal details partly masked, such as your taxpayer ID. The financial data stays fully visible, so it works for tax preparation, representation and income verification. A copy is the actual return as you filed it, with all attachments, including W-2s.
If you need a copy for court or an administrative proceeding, Form 4506 has a box to request it certified. For everything else, try the transcript first.
The five transcript types
- Sign in to your IRS online accountRegister first if you haven't; this is the fastest way.
- Pick the transcript type and yearTax return for lenders, tax account for balances and changes.
- Can't register? Order by mailTax return or tax account transcript, 5–10 calendar days to your address on file.
- Or call 800-908-9946The automated phone service mails it to the same address.
- Older years or other types: Form 4506-TAny transcript type, including years the other routes don't cover.
The IRS offers these at no charge, and the years available differ:
| Transcript | What it shows | Years available |
|---|---|---|
| Tax return | Most line items from the return as originally filed, with forms and schedules | Current and 3 prior years |
| Tax account | Filing status, taxable income, payments, and changes after filing | Current and 9 prior online; current and 3 prior by mail or phone |
| Record of account | The tax return and tax account transcripts combined | Current and 3 prior years |
| Wage and income | Data from W-2, 1098, 1099 and 5498 forms the IRS received | Current year from about the first week of February |
| Verification of non-filing | Letter that the IRS has no processed return | After June 15 for the current year; any time for the prior 3 |
The tax return transcript doesn't show later changes, but the IRS says it usually meets the needs of mortgage lenders. The wage and income transcript only displays information returns that were actually filed, so it may not list everything issued to you, and it is limited to about 85 income documents.
How to get one
Online is the route to try first. Your Individual Online Account lets you view, print or download transcripts, see your prior-year adjusted gross income, and look up payment history.
By mail, ask for a tax return or tax account transcript through Get transcript by mail, or by calling the automated line at 800-908-9946. You need your mailing address from your latest return, and the transcript goes to the address the IRS has on file.
With Form 4506-T, you can request any transcript type, including years the other routes don't cover. It's also what the IRS tells you to use if the online wage and income transcript can't be generated.
Do this early if a deadline is involved, since mailing takes time, and watch for the IRS's own warning: it doesn't contact taxpayers by email, text or social media to ask for personal information.
How soon after filing

A new return needs processing before a transcript exists. The IRS says that for a return showing a refund or no balance due, allow 2 to 3 weeks after you e-file, or 6 to 8 weeks after you mail a paper return. If you owe and paid in full with your e-filed return, it's also 2 to 3 weeks; if you pay later, wait 3 to 4 weeks after full payment.
Getting a copy of the return itself
Complete Form 4506 and mail it with the fee: $30 per return requested, paid by check or money order to the United States Treasury, with your SSN or ITIN and "Form 4506 request" written on it. Processing may take up to 75 calendar days. If the IRS can't find the return, it refunds the fee.
The form says copies of Forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ are generally available for 7 years from filing. Beyond that you rely on your own records, which is a good reason to keep them; the retention guide says how long. Note also that a missing W-2 is a related problem with a different fix: see the missing W-2 page.
Keeping your own copy
The simplest fix is a folder for each tax year: the filed return as a PDF, the W-2s and 1099s, and the e-file confirmation. The tax filing deadline page shows how the year runs.
Paperlock can hold the PDF in a Face-ID-locked vault and read the key numbers, so "what was my AGI in 2024?" is a question you ask, not a document you hunt for. Your transcript or return copy remains the IRS's record; the mortgage scenario shows where lenders ask for it.
