The verdict

Genius Scan is a very good scanner, and we say that as the makers of a different app. It captures pages fast, cleans them up well, keeps your documents on your phone unless you choose otherwise, and its free tier is genuinely usable. If your problem is "turn this paper into a tidy PDF and send it somewhere," you can stop shopping.

Where it stops is after the scan. Genius Scan gives you good files; it doesn't read them for you, track the dates inside them, or answer questions about them months later. That's a different job, and it's the one Paperlock does.

Overview

Genius Scan is made by The Grizzly Labs, a small studio in Paris. It has been on the App Store since 2010, and its US listing showed a rating of 4.90 out of 5 from 1,370,266 ratings when we read it on October 17, 2026. That's an enormous number of happy people for a utility app. The developer says it has more than 20 million users; we can't verify that, but the rating count makes it believable.

The app runs on iPhone and Android, with an optional cloud service (Genius Cloud) for backup, sync between devices and web access. There's also a team plan for small businesses.

What Genius Scan does well

Capture. Point the camera at a page and Genius Scan finds the edges, fixes the angle, removes shadows and cleans up the result. Batch mode lets you shoot a stack of pages in a row without tapping through screens for each one. If you scan a 20-page contract at a kitchen table, this is where it earns its rating.

PDF basics. It creates multi-page PDFs, merges and splits documents, imports photos and existing PDFs, and can password-protect a PDF before you send it.

Exports. This is its signature strength. The paid plan exports to Box, Dropbox, Evernote, Expensify, Google Drive, iCloud Drive, OneDrive, OneNote, FTP, WebDAV and more, and it can export automatically in the background. If your scans need to land in an accountant's folder every month, that's a real time saver.

Restraint. No social features, no clutter. It's a scanner that behaves like one.

Organization, to a point. You can tag documents and search their contents and metadata. The paid plan adds name templates and smart renaming, so files don't all end up called "Scan 14."

Pricing as read on October 17, 2026

Prices change, so treat these as a snapshot and check before you buy.

  • Basic: free. The Genius Scan pricing page calls it "free (yes, really)" and lists unlimited, high-resolution scanning.
  • Ultra: $39.99 a year on the same page. It adds text recognition, exports to all major cloud services, Face ID and password protection, smart renaming and unlimited Genius Cloud backup and sync.
  • Teams: the page quoted $40 down to $20 per license per year, depending on volume.

The App Store listing shows several in-app purchases without saying which period each covers: Genius Scan Plus at $1.99 and $11.99, and Genius Scan Ultra at $4.99, $39.99 and $49.99. The in-app store shows the exact term before you pay.

What users say on the App Store

We read the 50 most recent US reviews (September 28 to October 15, 2026). Forty-one gave five stars, four gave four, one gave two and four gave one. Three that sum up the pattern:

  • October 15, 2026, five stars: "Even with the free version it does everything I need it to."
  • October 15, 2026, five stars, from a long-time user: "The scan quality is excellent but the export function is buggy."
  • October 8, 2026, one star: "The free version is just a regular camera, you have to buy the upgrade for it to be decent scanner."

The complaints we saw were about subscriptions and a rating prompt, not about lost documents.

Privacy and data handling

This is where Genius Scan stands out among scanner apps. Its privacy policy says your documents are stored only on your device and are processed there: text recognition, PDF creation and image processing all happen on the phone. They leave it only when you choose to: exporting to another app, sending to a cloud service, or creating a Genius Scan account. When you export to Dropbox or Google Drive, the policy says the upload goes straight from the app to that service, not through The Grizzly Labs' servers.

If you do create an account (part of Ultra's Genius Cloud), your documents are stored on the company's servers for backup and sync; the policy names Amazon Web Services for that. It also lists Amplitude for app analytics.

How Paperlock compares

Paperlock isn't a better scanner than Genius Scan. It's a different kind of app: a Face-ID-locked vault that reads every document you save, works out what it is, who it's from, the dates and amounts, and files it with a clear title. Later you ask in plain English, "when does my car insurance renew?", and the answer comes back with the source document attached. If the answer isn't in your vault, it says so. Our side-by-side comparison goes deeper, and how it works shows the flow.

Where Genius Scan is better, plainly:

  • Fully on-device processing. Paperlock reads documents partly on its own servers, over an encrypted connection, and doesn't keep them there. Genius Scan's policy says its processing stays on the phone. If that is your top priority, Genius Scan wins.
  • Free tier. Genius Scan's free tier scans without a cap. Paperlock's free tier holds 25 documents and 5 questions a month.
  • Exports, batch scanning, PDF editing, Android and web access. Paperlock does none of the last three.

Where Paperlock is better: understanding what your documents say, expiry reminders 30 and 7 days ahead with no setup, and no account of any kind.
